MISC wins tanker operator of the year 2017

MISC Group (MISC) won the Tanker Operator of the Year at the Lloyd’s List Asia Pacific Awards presented last night at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore. This is the second year running that MISC has been a finalist of the Lloyd’s List Asia Pacific Awards, one of the most respected awards within the international maritime industry and the first win for the Group.
The Lloyd’s List Award series recognises the industry’s successes, setting a benchmark for excellence while rewarding innovative ideas and concepts that have pushed the boundaries of what is possible.
In winning the award the judges noted that MISC was recognised for its impressive performance that demonstrate operational excellence above the industry’s average while placing priority on high standards of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and environmental stewardship.
Commenting on the award, Mr. Yee Yang Chien, President/Group CEO of MISC, said, “This award is a testament to the focused execution and shared success by the MISC Group all over the world to establish MISC as an international provider of energy related maritime solutions and services, with the strength and ability to bring change in the industry. We are honoured to see the panel of judges, comprising some of the leading industry experts, recognise MISC’s consistent efforts in enhancing our operational excellence. This includes aligning our own policies and procedures with industry’s best practices which helps to improve performance and attain higher standards of safety and pollution prevention,”
MISC’s notable accomplishments this aspect include our high performance in the Ship Inspection Report (SIRE) programme, the most significant worldwide safety initiative introduced by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF). SIRE stressed on the importance of meeting satisfactory tanker quality and ship safety standards. By end of 2016, the average score of The Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) was 3.2 which place us appreciably above the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners’ (INTERTANKO) average of 2.92.
In the chemical tanker industry, our Chemical Distribution Institute’s (CDI) World Fleet Average compliance stands at 99.7 against the World Average at 99.1. Similarly for the Personnel Safety Performance, MISC’s 12-months rolling data of 2016 is submitted to INTERTANKO monthly and compared to 190 operators around the world, we are consistently ranked amongst the Top 60 for LTIF and Top 35 for TRCF. 87% of PSC Inspections resulted in zero observations against Paris & Tokyo MOU figures of 48 – 57%.
Catalyst to the excellent performance in SIRE and TMSA, MISC’s utmost priority is on Marine Assurance activities. Our internal Audit & Training superintendents diligently strive to improve safety and performance on board, as well as to ensure that the vessels are in compliance with the Company, industry and regulatory requirements. Above and beyond the mandatory internal audit requirements, another in-house audit group performs non-biased sampling audits where findings are reported directly to the highest management. External auditors are also engaged to carry out audits on board the vessels especially on areas of navigational safety.
Mr. Yee also said “We believe that business and operational performance go hand in hand, hence our commitment to implement high standards in our HSE and Marine Assurance practices throughout the years and it is consistent with our belief to be consistently better in everything that we do. This a priority for MISC, not only because it is one of the key factors in our license to operate but also to provide a safe working environment on board all our vessels that significantly improves our overall operational excellence, reliability, safety, and on-time cargo deliveries. Moving forward, MISC will continue to diligently enhance our operational performance and strive for higher efficiency in line with our mission to care for the environment and operate responsibly.”
Recipients are chosen from entries taken from around the Asia Pacific region and adjudicated by a distinguished judging panel which this year included: Su Yin Anand, Partner, Ince & Co; Captain Abishek Asija, General Manager, Head of Business, Synergy Group; David Chin, Executive Director, Singapore Maritime Foundation; Khalid Hashim, Chief Executive, Precious Shipping; David Roberts, Managing Director, The Standard P&I Club; Marlon Rono, President, Magsaysay; Beng Tee Tan, Assistant Chief Executive, Development, MPA; Tim Wilkins, Regional Manager Asia-Pacific, Intertanko and Abdul Hadhi editor of Lloyd’s List Asia and chairman of the judging panel.
