Brookes Bell – the global technical and scientific consultancy – has appointed Captain David Ireland as a Principal Master Mariner.  David will be based in the US and brings local Special Casualty Representative (SCR) capabilities to the region following the company’s acquisition of marine consultancy firm 3D Marine USA Inc, earlier this year. David brings with him a wealth of experience in marine consultancy. He is a master mariner with a 28-year long career in the tanker industry and has been listed as a member of the Lloyd’s SCR Panel since 2016.

Across a prominent career he has worked in Singapore and the USA and has handled numerous cases for P&I Clubs, Hull & Machinery Underwriters, Shipowners and Lawyers involving a wide range of vessel types.  He is highly skilled at conducting newbuild, demolition and marine warranty surveys, collision and grounding investigations, vessel damage and hull repair investigations, berth and fixed object damage and cargo contamination examinations.  He frequently provides expert advice and opinion on tanker operations in court and at arbitration in both the UK and USA.
As an SCR, David has attended vessel groundings, re-floatings and salvage operations for various insurance clients all around the world and has considerable experience in all aspects of wreck removal operations.

During his seafaring career, he worked with the major oil companies and shipping companies, spending his last nine years at sea as Master of ULCC and VLCC tankers operating primarily in the Middle East, the Americas, Far East and Africa.  He has extensive experience of tanker terminals throughout the world, including navigating in and around tanker ports, conducting berthing operations and cargo handling at tanker ports.  Similarly, he has completed ship-to-ship (STS) transfer operations worldwide, including offshore lightering operations on the US Gulf Coast, deep sea STS off the US West Coast, west coast of Africa and various locations in the Far East.

Anthony York, Chief Operating Officer, Brookes Bell adds: “We are delighted to welcome David to the Brookes Bell family.  Throughout the global pandemic our consultants have worked hard to continue delivering our exceptional levels of service.
